About
My practice involves a general interest in employing paint to elicit sensations of existentialism through surrealist renderings of the figure and environment. By exploring themes such as inner conflict, the uncanny, distortion, stimulation, isolation, discomfort, motion, light, and energy, I intend to leave the viewer with the same questions that I observe about the human experience myself. Cultivated from a process of collecting and studying images from digital and printed archives from a variety of sources, my work explores the tensions and psychological effects of images, color, and light as physical and conceptual material in relationship to painting. I use a wet on wet application of oil paint and thinning medium (gamsol and/or walnut oil) with variety of brush types on oil-ground primed stretched canvas or linen to create smooth, rendered surfaces consisting of combinations of atmospheric blended/blurred color value shifts and sharp, precise edges and shapes. Through these techniques and specific use of the traditional medium of oil paint, I am interested in expressing personal as well as collective states of discomfort and disconnection with humanity in contemporary life.
