- COMMODITY MANIFESTOS is a rose-hued textile collection responding to the bizarre reality and peculiar actions of American contemporary consumerism. Its subject inquires about issues of overconsumption, advertising, and pop culture, threading in themes of desire, beauty, whimsy, and joy. The works are handwoven Jacquard TC2 weavings sewn with dye sublimated fabrics, quilted, embellished, or are screens for projected videos. The weavings are digital collages of text and images from vintage and contemporary fashion Polish and American magazines, product packaging, protest posters, surrealist writing, python generated text, pixilated Jacquard TC2 files, video stills, and floral photography. The fabrics are images of those digital collages dye sublimated onto cloth. A selection of works are overlayed with videos of scrolling text questions and statements of overconsumerism, and at times solely flashing letters, numbers, or symbols. COMMODITY MANIFESTOs engage with the material history of jacquard weaving and textile labor with hyper interplay of technology and pop culture. Through this intersection of slow craft and digital image, the collection preserves weaving and digital histories, as well as dialogue between woven and digital text, and takes advantages of these histories’ strengths to appropriately question consumerism. It is these conceptual considerations, as well as study of text and objects that are substrates to her artistic work fostering reflection on the peculiar actions of contemporary popular culture and its politic.
